Plan nothing else for arrival night. People trickle in at different times, someone’s train is late, dinner is inevitably a takeaway — and none of it matters, because the tub is the gathering point. It does the work no icebreaker game has ever managed: hierarchy dissolves in hot water. The friend-of-a-friend nobody knew at 7pm is telling their best story by ten.
The morning-coffee tub
This is the quiet one, and my favourite. Two or three early risers, mugs in hand, steam rising into cold air while the house sleeps. The best conversations of the weekend happen here, not at the big Saturday dinner. Our booking diary is coldest-season heavy — January is our busiest month and 56% of bookings land between January and May — and I’m convinced the morning tub is a large part of why cold-weather weekends work at all.
The stars
Most large group houses sit somewhere properly rural, which means a late soak comes with a sky you simply don’t get at home. Lights off, phones inside, twenty minutes of actual silence. Groups remember this one for years.
