The base decides the weekend

A stag weekend is logistics wearing a party hat. Twelve to twenty men, three activities, two nights, one WhatsApp group. The house is the fixed point everything else hangs off — so choose it for position first. If the plan is clay shooting, karting and a night out, you want a house 20 minutes from all three, not a beautiful barn an hour from everything. City house or country house — be honest about the plan

If the night out is the centrepiece, book the city: Brighton, Liverpool or Manchester, walking distance to the bars, taxis irrelevant. If the weekend is really about golf, poker and a barbecue — and by the second half of your thirties it usually is — the countryside gives you double the house for the money. Yorkshire and the Peak District are the value plays; a games room and a hot tub replace the nightclub entirely, and nobody loses a shoe.

What a stag house actually needs

One big table — poker, cards, and the Saturday dinner all happen there. A games room earns its premium harder on a stag than on any other group weekend. Outdoor space matters (barbecue, garden games, somewhere to stand about with a beer being wrong about football). Beds beat sofa beds: sleeps 18 should mean 18 real mattresses, so get the bed list from the owner before paying. And parking for six-plus cars, because stags drive.

The deposit conversation, had early

Owners are warier of stags than hens — that is just the market being honest. Expect a security deposit of £500–£1,000 on bigger houses, sometimes more. Do not resent it; use it. Book on the same clock as the hens

In our records, 56% of hen and stag bookings are made between January and May — January is the single busiest month, the moment wedding season becomes real in every group chat. The stags and hens are competing for the same big houses on the same summer Saturdays. Median booking lead time in our recent sample was 82 days; the organised groups book close to a year out. If the wedding is next summer and the stag house is not booked by February, the best options are already gone.

The money, per head (illustrative)

As an illustration of how the maths usually falls: a house sleeping 16 in Yorkshire at £2,200 for the weekend plus a £250 cleaning fee is £153 each. Add £60 a head for food and drink in the house and a £70 activity, and the whole weekend lands around £280–£320 per person — before the night out, which is where budgets go to die and where I will not pretend to help you.
