The Grouse Inn — On the A6 at Darley Dale, a few minutes from Darwin Lake. Hearty pub classics and a booked-ahead Sunday carvery with a choice of plate sizes — well set up for big family tables, and a good option if your group spans several generations with different appetites.
The Square & Compass — Darley Bridge, the nearest pub to the holiday village. Traditional 18th-century riverside inn with home-cooked food and Robinsons ales; a proper local for the first night, and the closest option if nobody fancies a longer drive after checking in.
The Remarkable Hare — Dale Road, Matlock. Relaxed pub-restaurant doing home-cooked pies, pizzas, steaks and well-regarded Sunday roasts, with local beers; dog-friendly too.
Stones Restaurant — Riverside in Matlock, with two AA rosettes. Small and special — book it for a subset of the group who fancy a proper occasion dinner rather than the whole party.
Things to do
A walk around Darwin Lake — The lake the holiday village sits on has its own walking trail through woodland right on the doorstep — genuinely free, and an easy first activity on arrival day before anyone's unpacked properly.
Chatsworth — 15–20 minutes away: the house and its 2026 exhibition, gardens, farmyard and adventure playground cover everyone from toddlers to grandparents. The banker day out.
Peak Rail — Heritage steam and diesel trains between Matlock and Rowsley South, running most weekends March–November; short, cheerful and good for mixed ages.
Heights of Abraham — Cable car from Matlock Bath up to a hilltop park with show caverns and big views; caverns and exhibition make it work in poor weather too, and the cable car ride itself is an event for younger family members.
Matlock Farm Park — Hands-on farm attraction between Matlock and Chesterfield; ideal if the reunion includes a gaggle of small children, and close enough to Darwin Lake that it works as a half-day rather than eating into the whole afternoon.
Cromford Mills & the Derwent Valley — The world's first water-powered cotton mill, ten minutes south, with canal-side walks — a UNESCO World Heritage site and a solid wet-weather-ish option.
Good to know
- Sainsbury's in Matlock town centre handles the group shop, with the huge Tesco Extra at Clay Cross about 20 minutes east if you need everything under one roof.
- Matlock station is the end of the Derwent Valley line with direct trains to Derby and Nottingham.
- Darwin Lake is tucked away down narrow lanes above Darley Dale — taxis will come from Matlock but must be pre-booked, and a designated-driver or minibus plan is wise for nights out.
