Browse all UK propertiesThe Brecon Beacons National Park is Wales's extraordinary interior highland — a landscape of sandstone peaks, glacial lakes, ancient waterfalls, and some of the UK's darkest skies. For groups seeking outdoor adventure, dramatic scenery, and complete disconnection from urban life, large group accommodation in the Brecon Beacons provides an experience impossible to replicate anywhere in England or the Lowland UK.
The Beacons cover 520 square miles and encompass four distinct upland ranges: the Black Mountains in the east, the Central Beacons around Pen y Fan, the Fforest Fawr Geopark in the west, and the Black Mountain range in the far west. Each offers a different character and terrain for group walking, cycling, and adventure activities. The National Park also encompasses the northern valleys of the South Wales coalfield and the remarkable Waterfall Country near Pontneddfechan — an extraordinary concentration of cascading waterfalls accessible via riverside gorge paths.
The Brecon Beacons International Dark Sky Reserve is one of only a handful in the world and the first designated in Wales. On clear nights, the absence of light pollution reveals a night sky of astonishing richness — ideal for groups who have never experienced truly dark skies. Several of our Brecon Beacons group houses sit within the dark sky reserve, and stargazing evenings on the hillside above the property are regularly the highlight of group stays.
Pen y Fan (886m) is the highest peak in Southern Britain south of Snowdonia, and the most popular mountain in Wales. The standard route from the Storey Arms car park on the A470 takes most groups 3–4 hours return — a challenging but entirely achievable walk that rewards with panoramic views across the Welsh hills and, on clear days, to the Bristol Channel and beyond. The horseshoe ridge walk taking in Corn Du, Pen y Fan, and Cribyn is one of Wales's finest mountain routes: a full day of outstanding ridge walking with 360-degree views throughout.
For groups seeking more challenging winter walks, Pen y Fan in snow and ice is a spectacular and demanding environment — crampons and ice axes are required in icy conditions, but the rewards are extraordinary. Several local mountain guiding companies offer qualified group leadership for winter mountain days.
The Waterfall Circuit near Pontneddfechan in the western Beacons takes groups through a gorge containing four spectacular waterfalls, including the double cascade of Sgwd yr Eira (Fall of Snow) — famously walkable behind the curtain of water. This is one of Wales's most dramatic short walks and consistently captivates groups of all ages and fitness levels. The gorge woodland in autumn colour is particularly beautiful, and the waterfalls are most impressive after winter rain.
The Beacons offer an outstanding range of group adventure activities beyond walking. Mountain biking on the extensive trail networks above Merthyr Tydfil and around the Brechfa Forest is excellent for groups with mixed fitness levels. Caving in the Brecon Beacons limestone belt is a genuine adventure — the limestone caves of the Waterfall Country area include Porth yr Ogof (the largest cave entrance in Wales) with expert-guided group sessions available. Horse riding on the open moorland above Brecon and Abergavenny is superb, with several trekking centres offering group rides tailored to all experience levels. Llangorse Lake — Wales's largest natural lake — is excellent for kayaking, paddleboarding, and wild swimming.
Abergavenny — the market town at the eastern gateway to the Beacons — has earned a remarkable culinary reputation as the home of the Abergavenny Food Festival, one of Wales's best food events held each September. The town's independent restaurants and the celebrated Hardwick gastropub (consistently one of Wales's best) reward groups who venture into town for evening dining. Brecon itself has several good restaurants and pubs, and the farms surrounding the market town produce outstanding Welsh lamb, beef, and seasonal vegetables.
The Brecon Beacons is outstanding for active hen parties, walking groups, cycling groups, military and endurance challenge groups (the Special Forces selection route crosses the Beacons), and families celebrating milestones in a spectacular outdoor setting. The relative accessibility from Cardiff, Bristol, and the West Midlands makes it practical for groups who want a dramatic countryside break without a long journey.
Cardiff is 45 minutes south — ideal as an arrival city with easy train connections. Bristol is 1 hour south-east via the M4. The Gower Peninsula (designated the UK's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) is 45 minutes south-west and worth combining for groups with time to extend their stay.
