Woods, Dulverton
The town's best-known bar and restaurant, in Bank Square, with a serious wine list and a bar that fills up early on a Saturday
Local Guide
Dulverton is the small town at the southern gateway to Exmoor, where the River Barle comes down off the moor under a five-arched medieval bridge. The National Park's visitor centre is here, and so are the shops, pubs and restaurants a big group needs; the moor itself starts at the edge of town. Within half an hour are Tarr Steps, the ancient clapper bridge over the Barle; Dunkery Beacon, Exmoor's highest point; Wimbleball Lake for watersports; and the red deer, Exmoor ponies and open heather of the moor. Exmoor was Europe's first International Dark Sky Reserve, so clear nights here are something to plan an evening around. The Exmoor coast at Porlock, Lynmouth and Minehead is 35 to 45 minutes north.
London Paddington to Tiverton Parkway in about 2 hours (Exeter St Davids in 2 hours 15), then 30 to 40 minutes by taxi or hire car up the Exe valley to Dulverton
M5 to junction 27 (Tiverton), then the A361 and A396 north through Bampton; about 3.5 hours from London, 1 hour 15 from Bristol, 45 minutes from Exeter
Local buses link Dulverton with Tiverton and Minehead but are infrequent; a minibus or cars are the practical way to move a group around Exmoor
Exeter Airport is about an hour by car; Bristol Airport about 1.5 hours

Area guide
Dulverton is where Exmoor begins. The River Barle comes down off the moor through the town under a medieval bridge, the National Park's visitor centre is on Fore Street, and the farmhouses and barns in the valleys around it are built for big households. A large group house near Dulverton gives a hen weekend, a family gathering or a walking party the moor on the doorstep and a town with pubs, restaurants and shops ten minutes away.
Exmoor is small enough to cross in an hour and empty enough that a group can walk all day and meet nobody. Tarr Steps, the ancient clapper bridge over the Barle, is the classic morning; Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on the moor, the classic afternoon. Red deer and Exmoor ponies are everywhere once you look. The moor was Europe's first International Dark Sky Reserve, so a clear night at the house is an event in itself, and the coast at Porlock, Lynmouth and Minehead is 35 to 45 minutes north when the group wants the sea.
Walk the river path to Tarr Steps and eat at the Tarr Farm Inn. Climb Dunkery Beacon from Dunkery Gate. Hire canoes and sailing dinghies at Wimbleball Lake, or book a wildlife safari to find the deer. Ride out across the moor from one of the Exmoor stables. Take the West Somerset Railway steam train from Minehead and walk up to Dunster Castle. Fish the Barle and the Exe. In the evening, Dulverton's own bars and restaurants are a short taxi ride, or a private chef cooks Exmoor lamb and venison at the house.
Woods in Bank Square is the town's best-known bar and dining room; the Bridge Inn sits beside the river; the Lion Hotel is the old coaching inn. Out on the moor, the Royal Oak at Withypool and the Exmoor Forest Inn at Simonsbath are the pubs to plan a walk around. For a group of 18, the house kitchen and a chef are the easy answer.
Dulverton suits walking and riding weekends, family reunions with three generations and a dog, milestone birthdays that want fires and big dinners rather than clubs, and hen weekends built around the outdoors, a spa afternoon and one long evening at the house.
The wider Somerset page covers the county's other group houses. Devon begins a few miles west, and Cornwall and Bath are each about 1.5 hours away.
