How to Plan a Bank Holiday Group Getaway in the UK – group accommodation planning guide

The maths of a bank holiday is simple and brutal: the Monday off turns a two-night weekend into three nights without anyone burning a day of annual leave. That is why bank holidays are the most contested group dates of the year – every hen party, stag do, reunion and family gathering in Britain is chasing the same houses. In 25 years and 100,000+ groups at our sister brand Butlers in the Buff, we have watched this scramble play out every spring, and the winners are always the same people: the ones who booked first.

Know your bank holiday

The two May bank holidays are peak-of-peak – spring weather, long evenings, and they land in the January–May window when 56% of celebration bookings are made. For May dates, book 9–12 months out; the houses worth having simply do not exist at three months. August bank holiday is a different animal: you are paying school-holiday pricing on top of the long-weekend premium, so it is the most expensive group weekend of the year outside New Year. Easter floats but behaves like May.

The contrarian play

My honest tip, and the one people thank us for: book the weekend AFTER the bank holiday. It is often 20–30% cheaper for the identical house, with identical weather, and everyone still gets a proper weekend – you have simply traded the free Monday for a real saving. If your group would rather spend the difference on food and drink than on the calendar, this is the move. Run both dates through our budget planner and let the numbers decide.

Book like you mean it

Contested dates forgive nothing. Collect deposits before you enquire – the full sequence is in our booking checklist – because on a May weekend the house you are “just checking with everyone” about will be gone by Thursday. If you have left it late, our last-minute guide is written for exactly this emergency.

Plan for the Friday-evening motorway

Everyone leaves work at five on the Friday of a bank holiday, and the M6, M25 and A303 all know it. Either leave before 3pm, leave after 8pm, or pick a destination that shortens the drive – the Peak District is within 90 minutes of five major cities, which on a bank holiday Friday is worth more than any hot tub. Brief the group on arrival windows, share the key-safe code in advance, and let the early arrivals get the heating on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best bank holiday weekend for a large group getaway?

The best bank holiday depends on your priorities. Easter is strongest for longer stays, Early May is excellent for countryside breaks, Spring Bank Holiday works well for celebrations, and Summer Bank Holiday is best for lively coastal weekends.

How early should I book a bank holiday group house?

For the best choice, book 6 to 9 months ahead. For larger groups, high-demand destinations, or premium houses with hot tubs and games rooms, booking even earlier is usually wise.

Are bank holiday weekends more expensive for group houses?

Yes, usually. Bank holiday weekends are high-demand periods, so prices can be higher and minimum stay requirements longer than on standard weekends.

Which UK destinations are best for bank holiday group stays?

The Cotswolds, Lake District, Devon, Cornwall, Brighton, Bath, and Yorkshire all work well depending on whether your group wants countryside, coast, or easier travel access.

What should I check before booking a bank holiday house for a group?

Check dining capacity, bedroom layout, bathroom count, parking, outdoor space, entertainment rooms, travel time for the group, and any noise or guest rules that could affect the weekend.
