Scotland is the group trip people promise themselves for years and then plan badly in a fortnight. It deserves better, so here is our honest primer — the one we wish every group read before they rang us about a castle.
First, the distance honesty
It is a long way. From London, Edinburgh is four and a half hours on the train and the best part of eight in a car; the Highlands add hours more on roads where forty miles an hour is optimistic. That is not a reason to stay away — it is a reason to stay longer. Our rule: make Scotland a four-night trip or do not make it at all. Two travel days wrapped around one full day is how groups come home disappointed; wrap them around three or four days and the journey becomes part of the story.
The three Scotlands for groups
An Edinburgh townhouse gives you the classic city weekend with more grandeur per square foot than anywhere in Britain — Georgian New Town floors, the castle on the skyline, and everything walkable. It suits hens, milestone birthdays and any group that wants restaurants doing the heavy lifting. A Highland lodge is the other extreme: stags on the hillside, whisky by the fire, phone signal a rumour. It suits groups who genuinely want to disappear — and who accept that the nearest shop may be a forty-minute round trip. Loch Lomond is the compromise that does not feel like one: proper scenery within ninety minutes of Glasgow, boats and hill walks by day, a fire by the water at night. If your group is split between city people and hill people, this is where you meet in the middle.
Seasons, priced honestly
Winter means Hogmanay, and Hogmanay means a premium — New Year in Edinburgh is one of the most contested bookings in Britain, so expect peak pricing and book the moment your dates firm up. Summer means midges on the west coast and in the Highlands, roughly June to September; they are not a myth and they do not care how much you spent on the lodge. Evenings inside or a smoking fire pit outside are the real defences. East-coast and city stays largely escape them.
Planning it properly
Go in with eyes open on logistics: a supermarket delivery booked to a Highland postcode is worth more than any welcome hamper, and one designated big-boot car matters more than a sixth bathroom.
