Local Guide
Newport, Trefdraeth in Welsh, is a small town on the Nevern estuary in the north of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, between the sea and the Preseli Hills. It has a wide beach at Newport Sands, the old harbour at the Parrog, the mountain of Carn Ingli rising straight behind the houses, and some of the best food in west Wales for a town of its size. Pentre Ifan, the great neolithic burial chamber, is three miles away; Nevern church with its bleeding yew and Celtic cross a mile; the Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs along the estuary and out around Dinas Island. Cardigan is 20 minutes, Fishguard 15, St Davids 45. Not to be confused with the Newport near Cardiff, which is two and a half hours east.
Paddington to Carmarthen in about 3.5 hours, or to Haverfordwest or Fishguard; Newport is about an hour from Carmarthen by car and 20 minutes from Fishguard
M4 to its end at Pont Abraham, then the A40 to Haverfordwest and the A487 north, or the A40 to Fishguard; about 5 hours from London, 2.5 from Cardiff, 1.5 from Swansea
The T5 bus runs along the A487 between Fishguard, Newport and Cardigan, and the Poppit Rocket coastal bus in summer; a group will want its own cars
Cardiff Airport is about 2.5 hours by car; Bristol about 3 hours

Area guide
Newport, Trefdraeth in Welsh, is a small town on the Nevern estuary in the north of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, with the sea on one side and the Preseli Hills on the other. It has a wide sandy beach, an old harbour, a mountain rising straight behind the houses and, for a town of a thousand people, remarkable food. A large group house near Newport puts the whole north Pembrokeshire coast, Cardigan, Fishguard and St Davids within 45 minutes, in a part of Wales that stays quiet even in August. This is the Pembrokeshire Newport; the city near Cardiff is 2.5 hours east.
The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs through the town and out around Dinas Island; Newport Sands is a ten-minute walk across the estuary footbridge; Carn Ingli is an hour's climb from the top of the street. Three miles inland is Pentre Ifan, the finest neolithic burial chamber in Wales, with Castell Henllys Iron Age village and Nevern's bleeding yew and Celtic cross nearby. Coasteering and sea kayaking, which were invented on this coast, are bookable from the local centres.
Walk the estuary to the beach and on round Dinas Island to the pub at Pwllgwaelod. Climb Carn Ingli for the view over Newport Bay. Visit Pentre Ifan and Castell Henllys. Book coasteering or kayaking for the brave half of the group and a spa afternoon at the house for the rest. Drive to St Davids, Britain's smallest city, and the beach at Whitesands, or to Cardigan for the castle and the Teifi. In the evening, a private chef with Preseli lamb and Cardigan Bay crab is the meal to build the weekend around.
Llys Meddyg, the restaurant with rooms on East Street, is why food people know Newport: a kitchen garden, a cellar bar and a dining room that takes big tables. The Golden Lion and the Castle Inn are the pubs, with the Royal Oak the third. Market Street and Bridge Street have the bakeries and cafés for the morning after.
Newport suits family holidays and reunions that want a beach, a mountain and a manor house, walking and outdoor weekends on the coast path, hen weekends built around coasteering by day and the house by night, and Christmas and New Year by the sea with everyone under one roof.
The wider Pembrokeshire page covers St Davids, Tenby and the south of the county. Wales as a whole has its own guide, and Cardiff is about 2.5 hours east.
