The house
About Number One
Number One is the first house on The Terrace, a Grade II listed row designed by Augustus Pugin for the directors of the Kendal to Windermere railway. It sleeps 14, plus 2 infants in travel cots, across six bedrooms. Windermere station is a couple of minutes' walk away and the village is a short walk downhill.
The lounge seats 20 on big Chesterfield sofas, with a living flame gas fire and a 50-inch Smart TV. The dining room seats up to 20 with the table extended. There's a bar in the hallway: bring your own drinks. The kitchen has a 4-oven AGA with a 2-ring ceramic hob, a separate electric range cooker, dishwasher, microwave and TV. The utility room has the washing machine, tumble dryer and an American fridge freezer with ice machine.
Down in the cellar there's a 15-seat cinema with a 75-inch Smart TV.
BEDROOMS - Bedroom 1 (first floor): super-king (zip and link, can split into 2 singles), en-suite shower room, TV - Bedroom 2 (first floor): super-king sleigh bed, TV - Bedroom 3 (first floor): double (4ft 6in) antique-style metal bedstead - Bedroom 4 (first floor): king, French-style, TV - Bedroom 5 (second floor): 4 singles, or 2 singles and a super-king - Bedroom 6 (second floor): king Other bed set-ups need 7 days' notice.
BATHROOMS On the first floor, a family bathroom (shower, separate bath) serves Bedrooms 2, 3 and 4. On the second floor, Bedrooms 5 and 6 share a shower room and a bathroom with shower over bath. There's also a toilet downstairs.
OUTSIDE The 7-seat hot tub is in a private area at the rear. The patio has outdoor furniture and a charcoal barbecue (April to October). Parking for 6 cars, and an EV charger shared with White Moss next door.
GOOD TO KNOW - Up to 4 dogs welcome, £30 each - 2 travel cots and 2 high chairs - Check-in 4pm, check-out 10am. Monday and Friday starts - No ground-floor bedroom, 5 steps up to the front door. Wide doors, but no specific disabled facilities - Bigger group? Number One and White Moss next door sleep 26 and can dine together for up to 22. All five houses on The Terrace sleep 71
The Orrest Head walk starts across the road. It's about 20 minutes to the top.
