Local Guide
Snowdonia, Eryri, is the mountain country of north-west Wales: Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) at 1,085 metres, the Glyderau and the Carneddau around it, slate towns like Blaenau Ffestiniog and Llanberis, and a coast from Conwy round the Llŷn to Barmouth and the Mawddach estuary. Zip World, the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland steam railways, Portmeirion, the castles at Caernarfon, Harlech and Conwy and the beaches at Black Rock Sands and Barmouth fill the days off the hill. The group houses listed here are on the coast: a manor at Porthmadog, sleeping 19, and a house at Llwyngwril on the Cardigan Bay shore south of Barmouth, sleeping 30.
Euston to Bangor in about 3.5 hours for the north; the Cambrian coast line from Shrewsbury via Machynlleth to Barmouth, Llwyngwril, Harlech and Porthmadog is slow and spectacular, about 5 hours from London
M6, M54 and the A5 through Llangollen and Betws-y-Coed to Porthmadog, about 5 hours from London; the A55 along the north coast for Conwy and Llanberis; 2 hours from Manchester or Liverpool
The Snowdon Sherpa buses circle the mountain between Llanberis, Pen-y-Pass, Beddgelert and Betws-y-Coed, which solves the car-park problem on a walking day; otherwise a group wants cars
Manchester and Liverpool airports are about 2 hours by car; Birmingham about 2 hours 45

Area guide
Snowdonia — Eryri in Welsh — is the most mountainous national park in Wales and England, and the one that most rewards a group prepared to get outside. Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is the headline, but the park runs from the Carneddau in the north to Cadair Idris in the south and reaches the sea at Barmouth and Harlech. Large group accommodation in Snowdonia tends to be stone farmhouses, slate cottages knocked together and converted chapels, usually in a valley with a mountain at the end of it.
Llanberis and the Padarn valley sit at the foot of Yr Wyddfa and are the most convenient base for climbing it, with the mountain railway, the lake and a row of cafés and pubs. Betws-y-Coed, in the trees on the eastern side, is the busiest village and the best supplied — a sensible base for a group that wants shops and places to eat. Beddgelert and the Nantgwynant valley are quieter and more scenic. For the south of the park, Dolgellau under Cadair Idris gives mountains and the Mawddach estuary within reach of the coast.
Yr Wyddfa draws the crowds and the paths get genuinely busy in summer. The Llanberis Path is the longest and easiest underfoot; the Pyg and Miners' tracks from Pen-y-Pass are shorter and more interesting but Pen-y-Pass parking is very limited and usually needs pre-booking or the park-and-ride. Groups often do better on Cadair Idris, Tryfan, Moel Siabod or the Glyderau — comparable days with a fraction of the traffic. The Snowdon Mountain Railway from Llanberis is the option for anyone in the group not walking, and runs seasonally.
The slate landscape of north-west Wales is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the old quarries now carry much of the area's adventure industry — zip lines, underground trampolines and mine tours around Blaenau Ffestiniog and Bethesda are built for groups and run whatever the weather. The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways, Portmeirion and the castles at Caernarfon, Harlech and Conwy give a group a full day without a mountain. (Seasons and booking requirements vary, so check each before planning a day around it.)
This is walking and adventure country first — walking clubs, stag and hen weekends built around an activity day, company retreats that want something physical, and families with teenagers. It is less suited to groups wanting restaurants and nightlife on the doorstep; eating out means driving, and the best pubs book up in season.
Most groups drive: the A55 runs along the north Wales coast to Bangor and Llandudno Junction, and the A470 drops south through the middle of the park. Trains reach Bangor, Llandudno Junction and Betws-y-Coed on the Conwy Valley line, and the Cambrian line serves the southern coast. Manchester and Liverpool airports are each around two hours away. Brecon Beacons lies to the south and Pembrokeshire to the south west.
After dark
The gateway village's hotels and walkers' pubs, the Royal Oak and the Stables bar among them, busy every night of the season
Harbour pubs in Porthmadog, Dylan's on the beach at Criccieth, and the Ffestiniog Railway's own bar at Harbour station
Bars and restaurants inside the medieval walls and along the Menai waterfront, 20 minutes from Porthmadog
Venues, opening hours and door policies change — check ahead before planning your night around a specific spot.
Eat well
The café in the old chapel at the foot of the Watkin Path, for breakfast before the mountain and cake after it
Harbour cafés and the fish and chips on the quay, then the Mawddach estuary bridge on foot
Restaurants and menus change — check ahead and book for larger groups.
Days out
Walk up by the Llanberis Path (about 5 hours there and back) or the Pyg Track from Pen-y-Pass, or take the Snowdon Mountain Railway to the summit café; book the train and the Pen-y-Pass car park well ahead
The fastest zip line in the world at Penrhyn Quarry, the underground trampolines of Bounce Below at Llechwedd, and the mine tours; book a group slot
The Ffestiniog Railway from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog and the Welsh Highland Railway through the Aberglaslyn Pass to Caernarfon, narrow-gauge steam through the heart of the park
