Area guide
Whitby is the most characterful town on the Yorkshire coast — a fishing harbour on the River Esk, overlooked by the ruined abbey on the East Cliff and reached by the famous 199 steps. Bram Stoker set Dracula's arrival in England here, and the town has never quite let go of the fact: Whitby Goth Weekend fills the streets twice a year, the jet workshops on Church Street still cut the black stone the Victorians mourned in, and the harbour pubs look exactly as they should. For a large group it is an easy place to fill a long weekend, with fish and chips at the Magpie Café, boat trips from the harbour, and some of the best beaches and clifftop walks in the north of England within a few miles.
The coast between Staithes and Filey is one long run of fishing villages, sandy bays and cliff paths, and Whitby sits in the middle of it. Sandsend, three miles north, has a wide beach and the best surf; Runswick Bay and Staithes, a little further, are the postcard fishing villages of red roofs stacked above tiny harbours. South of the town, Robin Hood's Bay tumbles down a ravine to the sea and is the end of Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk, and beyond Ravenscar the coast opens out to the big resort beaches of Scarborough and Filey. Large houses here are a mix of clifftop and harbour-view homes in Whitby and Sandsend, converted farmhouses on the moors edge, and grand seafront houses down the coast — most with the sea in view from the kitchen.
Inland is the North York Moors, ten minutes from the harbour. The heather moorland, the villages of Goathland and Grosmont, and the steam trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway give a group a completely different day out from the coast without a long drive. Whitby is also within reach of York (about 1.5 hours) for a city day, and of the Yorkshire Dales and Masham for a longer tour of the county.
Start with the 199 steps and Whitby Abbey — English Heritage's clifftop ruin is the view everyone came for, and the Whitby Brewery tap next door is the reward. From the harbour, take a cruise on the replica of Captain Cook's Bark Endeavour, a sea safari along the cliffs, or from late summer a RIB trip to look for minke whales and dolphins. Fossil hunting at Saltwick Bay, surfing lessons at Sandsend or Cayton Bay, a walk along the Cleveland Way to Robin Hood's Bay, and a steam train to Goathland all work for groups of any size, and a private chef or a cocktail masterclass at the house saves the evening from a taxi convoy.
Fish and chips are the first meal of every Whitby weekend — the Magpie Café and Trenchers are the famous names, and the harbourside has seafood restaurants for a more relaxed dinner. The pubs are the town's nightlife: The Duke of York at the foot of the steps, The Dolphin by the swing bridge, and the bars along Flowergate for live music. Whitby has no clubs, so for a big night the best plan is a private bar hire or a late one back at the house.
Whitby suits hen and stag weekends that want sea air and a proper pub crawl rather than a city, family gatherings that need beaches for the children and walks for the grandparents, and celebration weekends timed around the Goth Weekend, Whitby Regatta in August or the Folk Week. Big seafront houses in Scarborough and Filey suit multi-generational groups; clifftop houses around Sandsend and Whitby suit celebrations with a view.
York is 1.5 hours away by road. The wider Yorkshire page covers the county's other group houses, and Durham and Northumberland continue the coast north. Our Yorkshire group accommodation guide compares the coast, the Dales and the cities for large groups.

Days out
Climb the church stairs to St Mary's and the English Heritage abbey ruins on the headland — the view back over the harbour and town is the definitive Whitby photo for the group

Harbour cruises on the Bark Endeavour replica, sea safaris and, from late summer, RIB trips out to spot minke whales and dolphins off the Yorkshire coast
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs heritage steam trains from Whitby across the moors to Goathland — Aidensfield in Heartbeat, Hogsmeade in Harry Potter — and on to Pickering, an easy full day out for a big group
