Area guide
Herefordshire is the quiet county — orchards, hop yards, black-and-white villages and the River Wye looping between Hay-on-Wye, Hereford and Ross-on-Wye before it enters the gorge at Symonds Yat. It has no motorway of its own, no big resort and no crowds, which is exactly why it is so good for a large group: a manor house or converted farm here comes with real space, dark skies and countryside that starts at the garden gate. It is also easy to reach from every direction, with Birmingham, Bristol and Cardiff each about 75 minutes away and London around three hours.
The county's houses are its great strength. Georgian rectories, timber-framed farmhouses, barn and oast conversions and small country estates around Ross-on-Wye, Ledbury, Leominster and the Golden Valley regularly sleep 16 to 30, with grounds, hot tubs and dining rooms that seat everyone at one table. Nothing is far: Hereford and its cathedral are in the middle of the county, the Malvern Hills rise on the eastern edge, and the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains are just across the Welsh border.
The River Wye is the centrepiece. Hire Canadian canoes at Ross-on-Wye, Kerne Bridge or Symonds Yat and paddle the gorge under Symonds Yat Rock, where peregrines nest on the cliffs and the Saracen's Head waits at the bottom. Hereford Cathedral holds the medieval Mappa Mundi and the chained library, with the Cider Museum and the Black and White House Museum a short walk away. Goodrich Castle above the Wye and Eastnor Castle near Ledbury both take groups, the black-and-white village trail through Weobley, Pembridge and Eardisland is a lovely lazy drive, and Hay-on-Wye, the town of books, is half an hour from the western villages.
Then there is cider. Herefordshire makes more than half of the UK's cider, and Westons at Much Marcle runs tours and tastings; the Herefordshire cider route strings together the small producers between Ledbury and Leominster. For a group that would rather not drive, a cider and cheese tasting at the house is the obvious evening, and a private chef cooking from the county's farm shops is the obvious dinner.
Herefordshire's pubs punch far above their size. The Stagg Inn at Titley was the first pub in Britain to win a Michelin star; the Riverside Inn at Aymestrey, The Bell at Yarpole and The Kilpeck Inn are the kind of country inn a group books the dining room of. In Hereford, Beer in Hand and The Barrels pour the county's cider, and The Bookshop does cocktails and late dinners. Ledbury and Ross-on-Wye have lively high-street pubs for a Saturday night that ends with a taxi rather than a nightclub.
Herefordshire suits milestone birthdays and family reunions that want one big house and a garden, walking and canoeing groups, hen weekends built around cider, spa treatments and a private chef rather than a city, and Christmas and New Year gatherings with log fires. It is a natural meeting point for a group split between the Midlands, the South West, Wales and London.
Malvern and the Cotswolds are to the east, the Brecon Beacons and the rest of Wales to the west, and Bath and Bristol are about 1.5 hours south. The England guide covers the other counties for large groups.
