The South Downs run through both, and a house on or just under the ridge gives a group the best of it — walking from the door, long views, and the coast half an hour away. Towns Worth a Day

Rye is the one most groups remember — a hill town of cobbles and timber frames, small enough to walk in an hour and well supplied with pubs. Lewes has a castle, a steep high street and a strong independent food scene. Arundel is dominated by its castle and cathedral and sits beside the Arun for river walks. Sussex is also the centre of English sparkling wine, and several producers run tours and tastings geared to groups, though they need booking ahead and transport arranging.

Sussex suits milestone birthdays, family gatherings and company weekends where people are travelling from London and the south east and nobody wants a long drive. It is also a good hen weekend county: a vineyard tour or spa day, a Downs walk, a private chef at the house, and Brighton available for the night out if the group wants one.

Getting There and Nearby Areas

Trains from London Victoria and London Bridge reach Lewes, Chichester, Arundel and Hastings in roughly 90 minutes or less, and Gatwick sits on the northern edge of the county with direct services south. The A27 runs along the coast and the A23 comes down from the M23. A car helps for the Downs villages and the vineyards. Kent is immediately east and Surrey to the north.
