Group-Friendly Pubs, Restaurants & Things To Do near Smedmore House

Smedmore House is on the Smedmore estate near Kimmeridge in Purbeck, Dorset. We’d plan around the village, Kimmeridge Bay and the surrounding coast, with longer drives for Wareham or Swanage. Confirm the exact house, wing and suite combination with the owner before allocating bedrooms; the main-house accommodation and optional additions are distinct arrangements. We’d keep a shared meal at the centre of the stay and choose outings that let the party split by interest. The local museums, rocky shore and hillier coastal paths won’t suit everyone equally. Confirm the kitchen and dining arrangement, visitor permissions and any catering plans directly with the host. A wedding package and an ordinary holiday booking don’t automatically include the same spaces or services.

Eating & drinking

Where to arrange group meals in Smedmore House, Kimmeridge

A full house party is larger than an ordinary pub table. We’d ask for an agreed room or adjacent tables and accept that some smaller venues work only for a subgroup.

  • Clavells Restaurant, Kimmeridge

About 5 minutes’ drive away in the village, Clavells offers seasonal dishes, a children’s menu and group-meal enquiries by telephone. We’d contact the team about the whole party, indoor seating and a coordinated menu. Its detailed calendar includes a November closure despite broader year-round wording, so check your exact date. Daytime service doesn’t establish that an evening dinner is available.

  • The Scott Arms, Kingston

About 15 minutes’ drive away, the Scott Arms serves pub dishes with views across Purbeck and welcomes dogs. We’d telephone about a large indoor arrangement and ask whether a set menu or pre-order is needed. The outdoor Burger Shak closes for winter, so don’t assume summer barbecue service continues. Book drivers or return taxis before choosing it for an evening celebration.

  • The Square & Compass, Worth Matravers

About 25 minutes’ drive away, the Square & Compass serves pies and pasties rather than restaurant meals. We’d use it for a smaller, informal outing after contacting the team about the proposed visit. It isn’t a dependable venue for a reserved full-house dinner or a broad menu for complex dietary needs. Check current food availability and be prepared to eat in a different arrangement.

  • The King’s Arms, Stoborough

About 25 minutes’ drive away, the King’s Arms serves pub food with children’s and smaller-appetite choices. We’d ask about seating the whole party indoors or using adjacent tables, with any pre-order agreed directly. Dogs are welcomed in the bar and garden, so confirm the right space if they’re coming. Don’t assume that restaurant seating and dog-friendly seating are interchangeable.

  • The Old Granary, Wareham

About 30 minutes’ drive away on Wareham Quay, the Old Granary offers a riverside dining room and family-pub menu. We’d contact it about a coordinated group meal rather than rely on ordinary online availability for a full house. Discuss access, children and dietary needs before confirming the arrangement. Leave time for town parking and the walk to the quay, particularly at busy weekends.

Menus, opening hours and group policies change — always confirm directly with the venue.

Things to do

Things to do in Smedmore House, Kimmeridge for large groups

Choose an outing for your party and confirm any operator booking or access requirements.

  • The Etches Collection, Kimmeridge

About 5 minutes’ drive away in the village, the museum displays fossils from the local coast and welcomes group enquiries. Its modern building has step-free access, a lift and accessible toilets. We’d arrange the visit directly and ask about the right admission package. Parking is limited; follow the museum’s published alternatives rather than leave cars along the village road, where they can obstruct emergency access.

  • The Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre

About 10 minutes’ drive to Kimmeridge Bay, followed by the approach from the car park, the centre offers marine displays beside the shore. We’d enquire about a coordinated group visit and access needs. It closes for winter in early November and plans to reopen in late March 2027. The path is narrow, sloping and uneven, and larger mobility scooters can’t reach the centre.

  • Tyneham Village

About 20 minutes’ drive via the available public approach, Tyneham offers a visit to the evacuated village within the Lulworth military ranges. We’d check the Ministry of Defence access notice for the actual date before travelling. Gates, flags and closures take priority over a saved itinerary. Keep to designated visitor routes and don’t touch unfamiliar objects; a closed route needs a different outing, not a shortcut.

  • Lulworth Cove

Allow about 30 minutes’ drive on the available public roads, with extra time if a range closure changes the route. We’d use the visitor information to choose a shoreline visit or a more demanding walk, keeping the least confident guest in mind. The cove, steep paths and nearby cliffs aren’t interchangeable routes. Check conditions and keep away from unstable cliff edges and rockfall areas.

  • Durlston Country Park

About 35 minutes’ drive away beyond Swanage, Durlston offers a visitor centre at the castle, exhibitions and coastal paths. We’d ask the rangers about a route for the party, with a shorter option for guests avoiding hills. The castle has lift access, while outdoor terrain varies. Check current times and any group arrangements separately from café or event bookings.

  • Swanage Pier

About 30 minutes’ drive to Swanage, followed by the walk from available parking, the pier gives guests a shorter coastal outing. We’d contact the Trust about a larger visit and any access needs, then let people take their own pace. Pier parking is limited and can’t be reserved. Seasonal and festive opening arrangements vary, so check current times rather than assume an evening stroll is possible.

The big shop, getting around and the things worth sorting before everyone arrives.

Good to know

  • Confirm the main house, Garden Wing and suite arrangements with the owner. Allocate bedrooms from the current plan and ask about stairs and bathrooms rather than infer access from the total guest capacity.
  • Arrange grocery delivery for a time when someone can receive it, checking the estate approach first. Ask about kitchen equipment and catering permissions before commissioning a large dinner or bringing in outside suppliers.
  • Follow the host’s parking and unloading instructions and keep estate access clear. If several cars are heading to a small village or beach car park, agree the route and passenger allocation before departure.
  • Check the latest Lulworth range and Tyneham access notices before any nearby coastal drive or walk. Download directions, but don’t treat a saved route as permission to pass a closed gate or warning sign.
  • Keep children supervised around the shoreline and follow local marine-conservation advice. Kimmeridge’s ledges can be slippery and uneven; a clear-looking sea isn’t proof that swimming or snorkelling suits your party.
  • Book rural taxis ahead and confirm the return journey. Bring waterproofs and shoes with grip, and check current times, winter closures and weather notices before leaving the estate.
