Group-Friendly Pubs, Restaurants & Things To Do near Howgills Barn

Howgills Barn is at Castlehaw Farm on Castlehaw Lane, on the edge of Sedbergh in Cumbria. We’d plan around the Howgill Fells and the Yorkshire Dales, with Sedbergh for supplies and meals. The barn is a different property from Howgills House, so use the Castlehaw address when organising arrivals, catering and taxis. We’d arrange one meal for everyone and offer a choice between a fell walk and a shorter outing. A group can enjoy the same weekend without all tackling the same route. Keep the main dinner close to home, and allow proper travel time if choosing the caves, waterfalls or a museum farther into the Dales.

Eating & drinking

Where to arrange group meals in Howgills Barn, Sedbergh

Sedbergh has useful options within a short journey, but a full barn booking needs advance discussion. Ask venues to confirm a whole-party arrangement, whether that means a private booking, adjacent tables or a catered meal at the house.

  • The Red Lion, Sedbergh

About 5 minutes’ drive away on Finkle Street, the Red Lion serves home-cooked bar food and welcomes dogs. We’d contact the pub about the full party and ask whether it can coordinate several tables. Don’t assume the garden can replace an indoor reservation in wet weather. It’s a practical first enquiry when you want a meal in town without a longer drive.

  • Smatt’s Duo Café, Sedbergh

About 5 minutes’ drive away at 32 Main Street, Smatt’s Duo advertises catering for parties up to the barn’s maximum guest capacity. We’d discuss a planned café gathering or its outside-catering service for a meal back at the barn. Agree the menu, staffing or delivery arrangements and dietary requirements directly. An organised evening event is different from the café’s ordinary daytime service.

  • Sedbergh Pizza

About 5 minutes’ drive away at 40 Main Street, this is a takeaway option for an informal dinner around the barn’s own tables. We’d phone ahead about a large order and agree a collection or delivery slot. Don’t send everyone to queue separately, or assume a delivery service will reach the barn without confirming the exact address and lane access first.

  • The Fat Lamb, Crossbank

About 20 minutes’ drive towards Ravenstonedale, the Fat Lamb is a country inn that caters for organised walking and motoring groups. We’d call about a booked lunch or dinner, with the menu and seating agreed before arranging transport. The operator warns that service can vary and tables can fill, so this works as a planned stop after an outing, rather than a speculative arrival with the whole party.

  • The Black Swan, Ravenstonedale

About 25 minutes’ drive away in Ravenstonedale, the Black Swan has restaurant and bar dining plus a smaller private restaurant. We’d ask which space suits your actual headcount; the private room shouldn’t be assumed to fit a full barn booking. Confirm an indoor table arrangement and any pre-order. It’s a longer pub trip, so book both directions of transport alongside the meal.

Menus, opening hours and group policies change — always confirm directly with the venue.

Things to do

Things to do in Howgills Barn, Sedbergh for large groups

Choose an outing for your party and confirm any operator booking or access requirements.

  • Winder fell walk

Start on foot from the barn using the host’s directions to the public paths, or allow about 5 minutes’ drive to the published town route. We’d choose Winder for reasonably fit walkers in suitable weather, with a shorter lower-level option for others. The ascent is steep in places and can be boggy. Download the local route, carry proper kit and don’t extend onto higher fells simply to keep a group together.

  • Akay Wood and the River Rawthey walk

About 5 minutes’ drive to the town starting point, this published circular walk visits woodland and follows the Rawthey. We’d choose it as an alternative to a summit day, with the route checked against everyone’s ability. Lower altitude doesn’t guarantee an easy or dry surface: expect muddy paths after rain and keep clear of the river edge. Download the current walk leaflet before leaving.

  • Ribblehead Viaduct

About 35 minutes’ drive into the Dales, Ribblehead makes a shared walking and railway-history outing. We’d choose a route around the viaduct suited to the party, rather than automatically turn it into a climb of a nearby peak. It’s exposed moorland, so check the forecast and use the public paths. The railway remains operational; stay away from the tracks and agree a clear return meeting point.

  • White Scar Cave

About 35 minutes’ drive near Ingleton, White Scar offers a guided underground tour. We’d contact the operator about the group and check cave water conditions before travelling. There are steps, metal-gridded floors and low sections requiring visitors to bend while walking. Wheelchairs, pushchairs, dogs and backpack-carried infants can’t enter the cave, and walking sticks aren’t suitable on the flooring. Keep an alternative plan for anyone unable to join.

  • Ingleton Waterfalls Trail

About 35 minutes’ drive away, this is a substantial circular walk with many steps, uneven surfaces and slippery sections. We’d choose it only if everyone joining is comfortable with that terrain; it isn’t suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. The operator currently takes payment on arrival rather than advance bookings. Allow ample daylight to finish, keep dogs on leads and check for extreme-weather closure before leaving.

  • Dales Countryside Museum, Hawes

About 40 minutes’ drive through Garsdale, the museum offers a more sheltered outing about life and work in the Dales. We’d contact the team about bringing a larger party and any access needs. Check current times, including the January closure, rather than assume a museum is always your winter fallback. Only assistance dogs are admitted, so arrange care for other dogs before setting off.

Check current tickets, group availability and access directly with the operator.

Good to know

  • Use Castlehaw Farm, Castlehaw Lane and the host’s approach instructions. The single-track access has a traffic-light system; we’d brief every driver before arrival and check suitability for any large vehicle.
  • Confirm the current bedroom and bed allocation. Ask the host about the ground-floor room and wet-room arrangements if anyone has specific access requirements.
  • We’d order groceries or arrange a coordinated takeaway for the first evening. Make one kitchen plan for the party so several households don’t all bring the same supplies.
  • Book return taxis or a suitable minibus when reserving a meal outside town. Give the operator the barn’s precise address and any passenger requirements.
  • Check the barn’s rules for dogs, music, visitors and outdoor facilities before planning a celebration. Keep late gatherings and deliveries within the host’s agreed arrangements.
  • Download walk routes and carry waterproofs, warm layers and shoes with grip. We’d offer a shorter plan for poor weather rather than expect a mixed group to continue onto exposed fells.
