Group-Friendly Pubs, Restaurants & Things To Do near St Thomas’s

St Thomas’s is a Georgian townhouse in Old Portsmouth, Hampshire, close to the cathedral, Hotwalls and harbour entrance. We’d use the old town as the starting point for meals and sightseeing, with Southsea and the Historic Dockyard as separate outings. The owner places the Hotwalls within a short walk and Southsea beach farther along the coast. We’d book one restaurant meal and one main attraction, leaving space for a shorter walk and time at the house. Museums, historic ships and viewing towers have different access arrangements. Ask guests about stairs, mobility and interests before buying a bundle of tickets that assumes everyone wants the same full day.

Eating & drinking

Where to arrange group meals in Old Portsmouth

Old Portsmouth has several genuine group-booking options within a short journey. We’d confirm the actual seating area and pre-order together, and avoid relying on outdoor tables as a weatherproof plan for everyone.

  • abarbistro

In Old Portsmouth, about ten minutes’ walk away, abarbistro takes larger-party enquiries directly and requires pre-orders for group tables. We’d phone with the full numbers and dietary needs, then follow the terms confirmed for that booking. Outdoor seating doesn’t guarantee an indoor fallback if rain arrives.

  • The Still & West

At Bath Square, about ten minutes’ walk away, the Still & West offers private dining with table service and set-menu options. We’d enquire about a celebration meal and ask which room and table layout suit your party. Confirm access to the proposed space before reserving it; harbour views don’t tell you whether everyone can comfortably reach their seats. Any private-room arrangement needs a confirmed booking.

  • Spice Island Inn

Also by Bath Square, about ten minutes’ walk away, this large waterfront pub serves meals and has an upstairs area used for functions. We’d ask the team whether that area or a ground-floor table suits your group, particularly if stairs are a concern. Agree the meal and seating directly instead of counting on the popular outdoor space. The harbourfront can be busy even when your own itinerary is flexible.

  • The Bridge Tavern

On East Street beside Camber Dock, about ten minutes’ walk away, the Bridge Tavern advertises private spaces and bespoke buffet arrangements. We’d enquire for a group meal when it’s operating normally. A refurbishment closure has been announced from 9 November 2026, with reopening planned for 25 November; confirm reopening directly before including it in a November itinerary. Don’t treat the planned date as a guarantee.

  • The Canteen, Hotwalls

About ten minutes’ walk away, The Canteen serves daytime food and offers takeaway. Ordinary café tables aren’t bookable, so we’d use it for smaller staggered visits or a takeaway plan, rather than promise the whole party seats together. Its private-hire minimum is larger than a normal St Thomas’s group. The waterfront setting is lovely, but it isn’t the simplest choice for a reserved group lunch.

  • The Briny, Southsea

About ten minutes’ drive away on the seafront, The Briny takes restaurant reservations and requires pre-orders for larger tables. We’d arrange a shared meal here when the group wants a Southsea outing, sending allergies with the enquiry. Dogs are welcome on the terrace rather than inside, apart from assistance dogs. A terrace booking has no guaranteed indoor replacement in poor weather, so choose the seating carefully.

Menus, opening hours and group policies change — always confirm directly with the venue.

Things to do

Things to do in Old Portsmouth for large groups

Choose an outing for your party and confirm any operator booking or access requirements.

  • Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

About ten minutes’ drive away, plus time to reach the entrance, the dockyard has a dedicated group-booking route. We’d choose the included attractions together, check individual access needs and avoid trying to rush every historic ship into one visit. Harbour tours are no longer automatically included with dockyard tickets. Confirm your exact ticket and group arrangements directly, including any separately booked tour, rather than rely on an old package description.

  • Spinnaker Tower

At Gunwharf Quays, about fifteen minutes’ walk away, the tower is open for walk-up ticket purchases under its current arrangements. We’d contact the current team before bringing a big party and ask whether everyone can enter together. Its Sky Bar, Clouds Café, afternoon tea and private event spaces are currently closed. Don’t plan a group afternoon tea from an older brochure; use the viewing visit as a separate outing.

  • Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery

On Museum Road, about fifteen minutes’ walk away, the museum welcomes self-guided group visits by advance arrangement. We’d contact the team if bringing the whole party and agree how to split around displays without overcrowding. Its collections offer a useful indoor option close to the house. Check the current exhibition and any event booking separately; ordinary admission doesn’t reserve a place at an organised activity.

  • The D-Day Story

In Southsea, about ten minutes’ drive away, this museum handles group enquiries and can arrange talks or tours, subject to availability. We’d allow time for both the museum and the landing craft included in the visit, checking access needs directly. Festival dates can change access to the surrounding site. Confirm your date and ticket conditions before combining it with another timed attraction.

  • Southsea Castle

About ten minutes’ drive away, the castle makes a shorter history stop near the seafront. We’d check which areas are open before choosing it: in winter the courtyard remains accessible under its published arrangements, while the keep and ramparts close. Stairs restrict access to those upper areas even in season, and weddings can affect admission. It isn’t a guaranteed all-weather, fully accessible castle tour.

  • Portsmouth Cathedral group tour

In Old Portsmouth, about five minutes’ walk away, the cathedral offers pre-booked guided visits for friends and other groups. We’d enquire ahead for a guaranteed guide instead of expecting an informal volunteer tour on arrival. Larger parties may be divided into smaller groups. Mention access needs when booking and work around worship and other events; it remains a working cathedral rather than a venue reserved for sightseeing.

Check current tickets, group availability and access directly with the operator.

Practical tips for a big group in Old Portsmouth

The big shop, getting around and the things worth sorting before everyone arrives.

Good to know

  • Confirm the house’s garage dimensions and arrival instructions with the owner. Don’t assume every vehicle fits, and check public parking rules before directing additional drivers to nearby streets.
  • The house is arranged over several floors. We’d check bedroom locations and stairs with guests before allocating rooms, particularly if anyone has limited mobility or is bringing young children.
  • Portsmouth Harbour station is a possible rail arrival point. Check the current service and arrange help with bags if needed rather than assume everyone wants the walk to the house.
  • Keep courtyard noise considerate in this residential area. Agree any outside gathering or supplier visit with the owner and confirm what suits the house before organising a late celebration.
  • Check current times and temporary closures before travelling. Keep a short indoor alternative for windy weather, and leave extra time for seafront traffic and event-related diversions.
  • Send restaurant numbers and allergies together, retain written confirmations and check cancellation terms. A private space, requested table or group activity is only secured when the venue confirms it.
