Group-Friendly Pubs, Restaurants & Things To Do near Upton Bourn Lodge

Upton Bourn Lodge is one of the separately booked houses at Little Upton Bridge Farm, Long Sutton, near Langport in Somerset. We’d plan around the village, the River Parrett and nearby countryside. The lodge has a shared dining space for its own guests, which makes a house meal a useful option when restaurant arrangements become complicated. We’d choose one organised outing and one restaurant booking, leaving another afternoon for the lodge’s games room and garden. River trips depend on conditions and crew availability; heritage sites have seasonal opening arrangements. Keep a flexible alternative rather than make every guest commit to a tightly timed circuit.

Eating & drinking

Where to arrange group meals in Long Sutton: Upton Bourn Lodge

A full lodge party needs a confirmed seating plan. We’d discuss the whole booking with one member of the restaurant team, including children, allergies and any neighbouring tables.

  • The Halfway House, Pitney

On Pitney Hill, about ten minutes’ drive away, the Halfway House serves pub meals and asks guests to flag dietary requirements when booking. We’d call about a party lunch and establish whether everyone can sit together or needs adjoining tables. It’s a country pub rather than a function room guaranteed to fit the lodge’s full capacity. Confirm the current menu and service before collecting everybody’s order.

  • The Firehouse, Curry Rivel

On Church Street, about fifteen minutes’ drive away, the Firehouse serves homemade pub food and pizzas. Its own booking advice says advance reservations are essential for parties. We’d discuss the group size and proposed dining area directly, including any stairs and the seating layout, rather than assume a normal online table booking covers everyone. A pizza meal can suit different appetites, but allergies and any pre-order still need agreement.

  • The White Hart, Somerton

In Market Place, about fifteen minutes’ drive away, the White Hart offers an exclusive corner of its restaurant for gatherings. This isn’t a separate private room, so we’d choose it when sharing the wider restaurant suits the occasion. Its published seated capacity can accommodate a full lodge party, subject to availability and layout. Dogs are welcome in the bar, terrace and garden rather than the main restaurant; tell the team if bringing one.

  • Art Tea Zen, Langport

On Cheapside, about ten minutes’ drive away, Art Tea Zen serves homemade breakfasts and lunches and advertises a room for parties. We’d enquire about a daytime group meal, checking the actual room capacity before promising exclusive seating for everyone. If it needs two sittings or separate tables, agree that openly with guests. Its town-centre setting makes it useful for a shorter outing, but check access and current service directly.

Menus, opening hours and group policies change — always confirm directly with the venue.

Things to do

Things to do in Long Sutton: Upton Bourn Lodge for large groups

Choose an outing for your party and confirm any operator booking or access requirements.

  • Muchelney Abbey

About fifteen minutes’ drive away, the abbey has monastic remains and an abbot’s residence to explore. English Heritage requires groups to book ahead and offers guided visits by arrangement. We’d ask about the route, access and the season before choosing it for mixed ages. Much of the visit is outdoors, so bring suitable layers. A guide needs a separate confirmation; ordinary admission doesn’t mean a private tour is waiting.

  • The Duchess of Cocklemoor community boat

The boat departs from Langport, about ten minutes’ drive away, for River Parrett trips. A full lodge party cannot travel together on this small vessel: we’d ask about separate trips and arrange something useful for guests waiting ashore. Operation is normally spring to autumn, and bookings depend on crew availability and conditions. Don’t collect firm contributions until the skipper confirms your plan, including boarding access and the final departure point.

  • Barrington Court

Near Ilminster, about twenty-five minutes’ drive away, Barrington offers gardens, parkland and the ground floor of Strode House. Court House itself remains closed for conservation. We’d choose it as a garden and estate outing, enquire ahead for the party and check which areas are operating. Guests can take different routes and meet again at an agreed place. It isn’t sensible to sell everyone a complete Tudor house tour while the main building is shut.

  • Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve

About thirty-five minutes’ drive away, Shapwick Heath has wetland trails and birdwatching hides. We’d agree the entrance and route before leaving: parking is available near different parts of this large reserve. Bring a quieter walking group, leave room for other visitors and discuss any organised visit with Natural England. Dogs aren’t permitted apart from assistance dogs. Paths into some hides can be muddy and uneven despite the broad central track.

  • Langport short town walk

About ten minutes’ drive to Whatley car park, the town’s published short walks take in riverside paths, the Hanging Chapel and the hill above the centre. We’d choose one route that suits the group, checking conditions before setting off. This is a self-guided walk on public paths, not a reserved attraction. Keep the party together at road crossings, allow space for other pedestrians and turn back if a riverside section is flooded.

Check current tickets, group availability and access directly with the operator.

Good to know

  • Use Upton Bourn Lodge in every arrival message, alongside Little Upton Bridge Farm and Long Sutton. Several houses share the wider site, so confirm the lodge’s parking and unloading instructions with the owner.
  • The owner lists ground-floor bedrooms, but that alone doesn’t establish every guest’s access needs. Ask about bathroom arrangements, thresholds and the route to the pool before agreeing room allocations.
  • Clarify the difference between the lodge’s private seasonal pool and any booked session in the separate walled-garden pool. Confirm the facilities included for your dates and organise adult supervision around water.
  • Reserve taxis before booking an evening meal, including the trip home. If guests arrive by train, compare the complete transfer from the chosen station rather than assume the nearest-looking service is the easiest.
  • River and wetland routes can flood after heavy rain. Check local signs and conditions, bring shoes with grip and choose an inland alternative if the planned path is closed or submerged.
  • Check current times and confirm restaurant numbers, allergies and cancellations in writing. Keep outdoor noise considerate and follow the lodge’s music and spa rules when returning from an evening out.
